Vincent Lacroix, on trial for stealing millions from small investors had a 30 000$ payment (French article, didn’t find an English one sorry) on one of his credit cards for strippers.

I can’t visualize 30 000$ of strippers.

The head of the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organisation said in Rome Thursday that two-thirds of the world’s population could be threatened by water shortages by 2025.

Wow. 2/3…

Italy’s deputy foreign minister, Patrizia Sentinelli, said access to water should be viewed as a basic and legal human right and not be subject to private interests seeking to profit from it.

Should profits from water business be forbiden ? Why from water and not from trees ? Land ? People ?

A Canadian company made cigarettes with a biofilter made of spinach that would make smoking way safer. The biofilter works like any plant and filters the bad part of the smoke. Could smoking be in again ?

I hate cell phones. This annoying device giving brain cancer. But as I’m pretty condemned to work as a temp for a couple of years, a cell for seeking another job is an option. Maybe a useless one, I don’t know…

As I checked some options and services, I got pretty angry about those famous hidden fees.

System access fee – $6.95* + e9-1-1 emergency service fee – 75 ¢
*As of October 1, 2006, the System Access Fee (SAF) will increase from $6.95 to $8.95 per month.

That’s just outrageous to charge for 911. And this SAF concept is just as outrageous.

- Ok sir, you plan will cost you 20$.

- Great, so I will be charged 20$ monthly ?

- Well, sir… There’s also a system access fee of $6,95.

- What do you mean ? My 20$ plan doesn’t include an access to the system ? So you’re selling something that doesn’t work ?

- With this fee, it will, sir.

- Then why don’t you put your crappy access into the plan ? Because it looks lower this way ? Because it would annoy the customer to have such big prices ? Do I look annoyed right now ?

Then I breakout, destroy the store and punch the sellers.

I was about to give up but I remembered about Virgin Mobile and their policy against those crappy hidden fees.

They have a nice plan for a cheap guy like me. You pay nothing, bloody nothing, when you don’t use the phone. When you use it, 25¢/min for first 5 minutes of the day and 15¢/min for the rest of the day. So let’s say I have 5 calls for a potential jobs. 3 for appointments, 2 minutes calls. 2 phone interviews, let’s say 10 minutes. So this month, I will pay $6,50. Plus taxes, I guess. So it would be about as much as this whole SAF would have cost me. And all the options cost nothing monthly (!!!), but if you use your sell to check your messages, you’ll be charged as if you’re making a call. The cheapest alternative for voicemail is $5 monthly.

The little downside about Virgin (same thing for any prepaid plan but you can’t get out this SAF), you have to buy the phone. The cheapest is $79.

I still unsure about this cell phone idea but Virgin is by far the best option.

I hope any other cell company will die.

People who consume alcohol earn significantly more at their jobs than non-drinkers, according to a US study that highlighted “social capital” gained from drinking.

This is one big reason why I hate this world, even if it perfectly makes sense.

From my point of view, here’s the biggest problem in Canada.

Scott Adams asks a good question: why do smaller people usually pay the same price than the tall people for clothes ? He also talks about planes and all you can eat buffet. I usually wears XL clothes, which means my clothes contains more material than smaller sizes but for the same price. Why are we doing this ? Because it’s just more simple ? To avoid tall and cheap people buying small sizes and looking pathetic ? To preserve social order between the tall and the small ? Because no one chose how big he’s going to be ? Because tall people are stronger and made it this way ?

Do you think things should stay the same ? Or should we pay more or less when our size matters ?

Other perspective: it seems obese people are richer than the normal people. Taxing the fat ones would have two positive impacts: more money for us and more motivation for obese ones to lose weight.

There this new thing: Bookmooch. You can get free books from anyone as long as you send books to someone in the network. Plus, you pay for the shipping of the books you send. Ok, that’s for the concept.

But how much does it cost to send a book ? Let’s speak for inside Canada. Here’s the latest Harry potter. According to its size and weight, it would cost 8,29$. So, it will cost about 8,29$ each time I want to trade a book.

Here’s already a business who is about taking books and giving them back: it’s called a library and it’s free… !

There are also used books stores where you can have a nice variety of books for 8,29$. And if you bring some books you don’t want anymore, you might get enough in return to get the books you want for free.

So, the concept of Bookmooch is interesting. But the shipping costs kill my interest.

Maybe people could do something like this at work. You bring some books for your co-workers and you pick up some you like.

With some luck, you can read some instead of working.

I thought about ordering a cap from the Atlanta Falcons shop online. 22$. Fair enough. How much for shipping to Canada ? 61 dollars (plus the cap itself) ????? Uh, no, sorry, forget it.
